Nathalie Eklund wins Swedish road race championship
Nathalie Eklund is the new Swedish national road race champion. The elite rider from the TALENT Elabo Development Team was the fastest in the sprint that concluded the race. Clara Lundmark ended up in fourth place after a heroic long solo.
The women’s road race was a 114 kilometre race on the Tierp Arena, a motorsport circuit with a 7.6 kilometre course. Nathalie Eklund en Clara Lundmark represented the TALENT Elabo Development Team.
Early on in the race, Lundmark made her move. At the end of the second lap, her advantage was already more than two minutes. Eventually, the gap between her and the rest of the pack was four minutes. Eklund did fantastic work behind to close down attacks.
Lundmark, a national junior champion in both the time trial and the road race in 2016 and 2017, saw her gap dwindling in the final. In the penultimate lap, she was caught again. It was impressive to see her hang on to the group and eventually sprinting to fourth place.
There were a lot of attacks in the final kilometres, but it all ended up in a dash to the line. Just before the final corner, Emilia Fahlin rode away from the small peloton with Eklund immediately in her wheel. She passed the WorldTour rider in the final meters, winning her first elite national championship! Earlier this year, Eklund already rode to a strong second place in the time trial championships.
